The African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal commends the coordinated response that has been mounted by the provincial government in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Irina which has hit number of coastal areas leaving a trail of destruction.

“The KwaZulu-Natal government has done a sterling job by putting all systems in place to swiftly respond to the cyclone. We have no doubt that these measures have helped to save many lives. This shows that we have a carrying government that is able to protect its people,’ said ANC provincial secretary,’ Sihle Zikalala.
According to the department of cooperative governance many homes have been destroyed as a result of torrential rain that has been pouring non-stop since Saturday night in coastal parts of the province. Government disaster teams have been working non-stop patrolling flood susceptible areas since the beginning of the cyclone.

In Umkhanyakude District, 60-year-old Phumaphi Makhaye has had both her legs broken when her mud-house collapsed on her early on Sunday morning.
“Our heats go to all people who have been affected by the cyclone. We have been informed that many people have had their homes destroyed by the cyclone. We urge our people to on the alert to prevent fatalities,” he said.

The ANC also commends government for providing relief to people who have been affected by the cyclone. “We urge our people to make use of police and army vehicles that have been made available to transport learners to school in areas that have been affected by flooding. We also commend government for proving food for people who have been affected.”

We urge the communities to stay alert and cooperate with government authorities.
